Overhailes Farm is situated in the heart of East Lothian between the quiet village of East Linton and the historic town of Haddington. The farm is now mainly arable, though we have some cattle during the Winter months. The Wright family have farmed at Overhailes since the 1950's.
The farm overlooks the River Tyne and Hailes Castle, originally built in the late 1200's but later expanded during the 1300's and 1400's. The castle is interesting not least because of its well defended position (with a thick curtain wall, moat to the south and the River Tyne to the north) but also because Mary Queen of Scots stayed there in 1567.
East Lothian is home to a number of other castles (Dirleton, Tantallon and the remains of Dunbar Castle) and numerous other attractions such as the
Scottish Seabird Centre, the
Museum of Flight (where you can explore Concorde) and the Myreton Motor Museum.
For those that prefer to 'do' rather than 'see' there is plenty to keep you occupied in close proximity to Overhailes. Traprain Law is a short walk from the farm, and there are many beautiful walks in the area. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at nearby
Markle Fisheries where they can guarantee trout of all sizes. The deep pool in front of the castle is also a popular spot for fishing on the Tyne. There are also numerous beaches in East Lothian (Tyninghame, Yellowcraig and John Muir Country Park are amongst the best).
East Lothian is famous for it's many challenging golf courses if you are looking to 'ruin a good walk'!
Whitekirk Golf and Country Club, Luffness, Muirfield,
Gullane,
The Glen,
Haddington and
Dunbar are all within easy reach.
John and Penny Wright welcome guests to their farm. It is a beautiful area where you can enjoy the peace and quiet of a rural retreat and re-charge from the hectic pace we all seem to live these days.
