Seeing and doing
For those that prefer to 'do' rather than 'see' there is plenty to keep you occupied in close proximity to Overhailes. Traprain Law is a short walk from the farm, and there are many beautiful walks in the area. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at nearby Markle Fisheries where they can practically guarantee trout of all sizes! The deep pool in front of the castle is also a popular spot for fishing on the Tyne. There are numerous beaches in East Lothian (Tyninghame, Yellowcraig and John Muir Country Park are amongst the best).
Eating and Drinking
There are some great restaurants very close to Overhailes. Smeaton garden nursery and tearoom is a must ... pick yourself up a treat for your garden and enjoy a freshly baked scone - what more could you want! You'll also find the Linton Hotel in East Linton, which caters for lunches and evening meals. Good food, (great cheeseboard the last time I ate there)! The Eastern Eye in Haddington (5 miles away) is a favourite as well. Great Bhuna - yummy!
Further afield, The Rocks in Dunbar (15-20 minute drive) is another popular eatery in East Lothian.
If you're heading into the Lammermuir hills, for a nice long walk or some 'big cat' spotting, try The Garvald Inn. On the coastal side of East Lothian there are plenty of restaurants in North Berwick and in Gullane you'll find the Old Clubhouse and the Golf Inn, both of which will quench your thirst and provide you with a hearty meal.
.... and of course there's always golf!
